Ahmed Shakir, the Member of Parliament for the Maavah constituency, has sent a formal letter to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu condemning the unfair dismissal of employees from state-owned enterprises.

In a letter sent on Thursday, Shakir stated that the unfair dismissal of employees from state-owned enterprises is a matter of grave concern. He further condemned the government's actions in the strongest possible terms.

MP Shakir highlighted that the dismissal of state-owned enterprise employees is being carried out unjustly. He noted that instead of reducing the number of high-salaried political appointees or scaling back wasteful projects, the government is placing the entire economic burden on the most financially vulnerable citizens under the guise of cost-cutting measures.

MP Shakir stated that seven employees from L. Maavah and 33 employees from L. Kunahandhoo were dismissed from their jobs for supporting the opposition MDP. Additionally, he alleged that six employees in L. Hithadhoo have been threatened with dismissal and coerced into joining the ruling PNC. MP Shakir further noted that such actions constitute a violation of fundamental human rights and the rights of workers.

Member Shakir urged the government to cease such politically motivated actions and to ensure that measures taken to reduce state expenditure are implemented in a manner that minimizes the impact on vulnerable families.

Reports surfaced on Wednesday alleging that employees at the Fenaka Corporation branch in HA. Baarah are being pressured to sign up as members of the People's National Congress (PNC). Furthermore, a significant number of employees across various State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) are currently being dismissed from their positions. This trend has sparked widespread concern, voiced not only by the general public but also by several local island councils.
