May 6 Attack: Defense witnesses testify for Haisham

While the court has finalized the defense testimonies for Haisham and fellow defendant Nazim, the Prosecutor General’s Office has instructed the police to expedite the investigation into the individuals who funded the assassination attempt.

The Criminal Court on Wednesday held a hearing to record testimony from defense witnesses in the trial of individuals charged in connection with the May 6, 2021, assassination attempt on former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Following the conclusion of testimony from state witnesses, the proceedings have now moved to the stage of recording testimony from defense witnesses presented by the accused.
The hearing held at the Criminal Court on Wednesday primarily focused on recording testimony from defense witnesses presented by the defendant, Ali Haisham. During the proceedings, the court recorded the statements of three witnesses produced by Haisham's defense.
Witnesses testifying at this hearing primarily focused on Ali Haisham's whereabouts and activities during the period the incident occurred. Furthermore, witnesses provided information regarding specific details the defense sought to clarify concerning his character and general conduct.
These are the pieces of evidence submitted by the defense to clarify his exact location and movements at the time of the incident.
In previous hearings, the court concluded the process of recording testimony from defense witnesses presented by the defendants, Tahmeen Ahmed and Mohamed Nazim. The proceedings have now moved forward to the stage of hearing defense witness testimonies for the remaining individuals charged in the case.

As several years have passed since the incident, the Prosecutor General’s Office recently directed the police to expedite the investigation into the financiers of the attack and submit the case for prosecution as soon as possible. The PG Office stated that on April 8, they advised the police to accelerate the probe into those who funded this act of terrorism and to present the findings to the office at the earliest opportunity.
