MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is working towards the disintegration of the Maldives.
Speaking at the official ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the resettlement of Thinadhoo City, Nasheed stated that while the Maldives is an archipelago of islands and Huvadhu Atoll remains the largest atoll in the world, President Dr. Muizzu’s administration has effectively abolished the atoll structure through legislative amendments.
Nasheed stated that the Maldivian people will not remain silent and will take to the streets in protest as the government seeks to amend the law to seize lands and areas currently under the jurisdiction of local islands. He further asserted that the MDP would not stand by and allow such actions to take place.
President Muizzu, listen very carefully. Before you seize these lands from the people of Thinadhoo and Huvadhu Atoll, consider the history of these islands and what drives their people to rise up. Reflect on the circumstances that compel these citizens to take to the streets and overthrow governments. The issue today stems from the erosion of the decentralization system and the overreach of leaders in Male'. President Muizzu, you are once again cultivating the seeds of a coup; you are working toward the disintegration of the Maldives.Mohamed Nasheed
Nasheed stated that island development can be achieved in harmony with natural resources. He further appealed for the preservation of reefs and beaches, urging that they not be destroyed in the process of development.
Furthermore, highlighting the ongoing dollar shortage, Nasheed stated that the exchange rate in the black market is currently increasing by 10 laari every day. He warned that even if people stop discussing the issue once the dollar rate hits 30 Rufiyaa and triggers hyperinflation, the reality of the situation cannot be ignored.
Governments change because the public is dissatisfied with the previous administration and seeks to entrust new leadership with the task of rectification. During their transition to power, they claimed to have received "green signals" from various sources, suggesting that support was readily available. However, when the latest "Sheikh" was finally scrutinized, it turned out he was no Sheikh at all. Now, there is absolutely no way for the promised funds to be secured.Mohamed Nasheed
Highlighting the government's failure to secure foreign aid, Nasheed stated that while one billion dollars was paid off by liquidating national assets, the country is now facing a severe dollar shortage. He further noted that the exchange rate for the US dollar has currently risen to 22.75 Rufiyaa.
