It will take three years to see results of government-proposed bills; citizens should not expect an immediate boost in revenue or dollar inflows: Naseer

Ihavandhoo MP Ahmed Naseer has stated that it will take three to four years to realize the actual impact of the proposed amendments to the Income Tax Act. Highlighting that these changes are long-term strategic measures aimed at bolstering the nation's foreign reserves, the lawmaker noted that there will be no immediate economic shift following the bill's passage.

Ahmed Naseer, the Member of Parliament for the Ihavandhoo constituency, has stated that the Maldivian people will not see the immediate impact of the government's proposed amendments to the Income Tax Act, even once they are implemented.

The member made these remarks while speaking during the parliamentary debate on the bill to amend the Income Tax Act.

MP Naseer stated that the positive impact of the changes being introduced to the tourism sector and the amendments to the Income Tax Act will only become apparent in three to four years.

The member noted that while the public might expect the passage of this bill to drastically boost national revenue and bring a significant influx of foreign currency into the country, this is not the reality of the situation.

The positive impact of our current efforts will not be immediately visible to the Maldivian people. The benefits of the reforms being introduced to the tourism sector and the amendments to the income tax laws will only be fully realized in three to four years. The public may anticipate that the passage of this bill will lead to an instantaneous surge in national revenue or a sudden influx of substantial foreign currency reserves; however, the true results of these measures will take time to materialize.

Speaking on the reasons behind these changes, Naseer stated that previous administrations had neglected the nation and driven the country into debt.

Consequently, he stated that the most critical task at hand is to bolster the nation's foreign currency reserves.

These remarks from a member of the ruling party reveal that even government lawmakers acknowledge that the bills currently being proposed will offer no direct benefits to the public in the near future.

The government has proposed amendments to the Income Tax Act with the primary objective of increasing state revenue. However, members of Parliament are currently debating the potential economic impacts of these changes, expressing a range of differing views on the floor. In his remarks, MP Naseer emphasized that the ongoing efforts are strategic measures aimed at ensuring long-term fiscal stability.
