Muizzu: 2027 to See Record Number of Development Projects Completed

Amidst repeated public concerns regarding the stagnation of development projects initiated by the previous administration across the islands, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that 2027 will be the year when the highest number of development projects are brought to completion.

President Muizzu stated that development projects are currently underway across the Maldives, from the north to the south. He noted that while several of these initiatives are slated for completion within this year, 2027 is projected to be the year when the highest number of development projects will be finalized.

Speaking on the sixth episode of "The Pulse," a podcast series produced by the President's Office, President Muizzu highlighted the progress of infrastructure development projects across the Maldives, stating, "Broadly speaking, 2027 will be the year when the highest number of projects reach completion."

President Muizzu highlighted the essential services and infrastructure that must be established in every island across key sectors, including healthcare, waste management, sports, education, banking, and commerce.

President Muizzu stated that during this term, he would ensure the establishment of essential facilities such as outdoor gyms, waste management centers, police stations or posts, and children's parks, along with other various amenities he considers necessary.

Furthermore, the President stated that numerous other projects will be implemented, with specific islands being prioritized. President Muizzu noted that these efforts are aimed at providing the highest level of development services.

President Muizzu, who has also discussed plans to settle 350,000 people in Rasmalé—a project involving the reclamation of 1,150 hectares of land—stated that people have been forced to migrate to Malé due to long-standing policies that left them with no other choice.

In this regard, the President noted that the issue of congestion in Malé would be alleviated if high-quality services were made available across the islands.

The program featured video interviews with several members of the public. One resident highlighted that while there is much to be done for the island's development, the highest priority should be completing ongoing projects before initiating new ones. He expressed concern over the prolonged delays in finishing essential works, such as the harbor and road construction projects. He further noted that these extended delays in project completion are resulting in significant losses and difficulties for the community.

As President Muizzu’s administration approaches its third year, the public has noted that numerous projects initiated and accelerated by the previous government have slowed down, with some coming to a complete standstill.

In his remarks, President Muizzu acknowledged that several projects are not progressing at the desired pace. He noted that this is due to various factors, specifically highlighting the current economic challenges.

Despite President Muizzu's current remarks, he rose to power after assuring the public that there was no cause for concern. During his campaign, he guaranteed that arrangements were already in place to secure the necessary assistance for both economic stability and the implementation of development projects.

In the sixth episode of "The Pulse" podcast, President Muizzu expressed his optimism that the ongoing project to construct modern council offices will be completed and operational by mid-2027. Furthermore, the President noted that numerous projects are underway to develop local council infrastructure, stating his belief that within the next two years, approximately 100 islands will have their council administrations operating out of brand-new buildings.

Regarding the Thilamale Bridge project, which is being developed in the Greater Male' region by an Indian company with the assistance of the Indian government, the President stated that the project is now progressing at a rapid pace. He expressed his confidence that the bridge project will be completed without significant delay.

In the sixth episode of "The Pulse," President Muizzu stated that the relocation of the commercial port from Malé to Thilafushi would be the government's most significant project. He further assured that the transition would be fully completed by November 11, 2027.

It has been observed that while President Muizzu offers assurances on various matters during different occasions, it is no longer a novelty for the Maldivian public to see these promises fail to materialize as pledged.

One of the most notable highlights is the Ras Malé land reclamation project, the current administration's largest housing initiative. Delivering the presidential address at the opening of the People's Majlis last February, the President announced that reclamation work is set for completion within 2025. This will be followed by the establishment of essential services, road construction, and the commencement of physical work on housing projects in 2026.
