PNC discusses party's future and internal elections on state media's "Nation Chat"

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has spoken in detail regarding the future and political activities of the People's National Congress (PNC) during the state media's "Nation Chat" program, despite previously refusing to answer political questions at a President's Office press conference by stating he was at a state podium rather than a party one.

In this program aired by the state media, questions were raised regarding the People's National Congress (PNC) internal elections and the ongoing efforts to strengthen the party's organizational structure.

The People’s National Congress (PNC) recently concluded its internal elections, successfully organizing and restructuring several of the party’s key organs. As the nation’s largest political party, it is undeniable that the PNC currently plays an indispensable role in the progress and development of the Maldives. With the conclusion of these elections, how will this internal strengthening bolster your political agenda? Speaking at the program, President Muizzu stated that the ongoing efforts represent the laying of the foundation for the People's National Congress (PNC) as a political force. He noted that while the party had only about 3,000 members when this administration took office, the dedicated efforts of the party's leadership and general membership have now increased that figure to between 60,000 and 70,000 members.

Furthermore, he stated that elections have now been held for all party organs and island steering committees, with constituency presidents and vice presidents elected through democratic processes.

Speaking on the future of the party, the President announced that preparations are underway to hold the PNC Congress, or the "Supreme Council" as stipulated in the party's charter, in mid-September. The President stated that the congress will include elections for key leadership positions. These roles include the President and Vice President of the Women’s Wing, the President and Vice President of the Youth Wing, as well as the election of party Vice Presidents and members to the Senate.

He further noted that the party's formal structure would be officially established during this congress.

By the grace of God, we have successfully laid the foundation for the political endeavors of the People’s National Congress (PNC). When this administration was formed, the PNC was a party of approximately 3,000 members. However, through our collective efforts, membership has now surged to between 60,000 and 70,000. We have also concluded the election of various party organs, including the steering committees across the islands. Through this democratic process, constituency presidents and vice presidents have been elected where required, and these positions are now filled by elected representatives. This is only the beginning. Following this, the party’s National Congress—or the "Supreme Council" as defined by our charter—is scheduled to take place around mid-September. During this Congress, we will proceed with electing individuals to various leadership roles. This includes the President and Vice President of the Women’s Wing, the President and Vice President of the Youth Wing, and other key positions. We will also elect a specific number of members to the party’s legislative body, commonly referred to as the Senate, as well as appoint the party’s Vice Presidents and other officials. Essentially, the formal structure of the party will be finalized during this upcoming Congress.

President Muizzu further stated that his objective is to transform the PNC into a party with robust internal democracy, fully prepared to serve the public. He emphasized that efforts are underway to shape the PNC into an inclusive organization with the full participation of youth and women. The President noted his vision for the party to lead by example and set a benchmark for others within the national political party system. Furthermore, the President expressed confidence that the upcoming congress would be a successful gathering, showcasing the highest standards of internal democracy within the Maldivian political landscape.

During a session on "Nation Chat," President Muizzu discussed the party's internal elections and its future direction. However, he declined to answer questions regarding whether the People's National Congress (PNC) moved to dismiss the Deputy Speaker of Parliament due to a loss of confidence in MP Nazim. The inquiry followed the President's earlier remarks that only those with integrity and his full confidence would hold positions within the government and the party.

President Muizzu stated that he would address the question only from a party podium or platform. He noted that he was not currently standing at a PNC podium. However, the President has previously discussed the future of his political party during appearances on state media.
