President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the government will prioritize the protection of the human rights and dignity of every individual within the borders of the Maldives.

President Muizzu has called upon civil society organizations, employers, law enforcement agencies, and all citizens to remain ever vigilant against those who exploit the nation's economic growth, digital and technological advancements, and international relations to profit from human suffering and abuse.

President Muizzu made these remarks in a message issued on the occasion of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. In his message, the President reaffirmed the Maldives' steadfast commitment to international efforts aimed at protecting human dignity, freedom, and fundamental rights. He further noted that this year’s theme, "Trapped Behind the Scam," highlights the evolving nature of human trafficking and the extent to which criminal networks are exploiting technology. Highlighting this as a significant challenge facing the entire region, the President stated that these developments have led many vulnerable individuals to fall victim to large-scale scam operations, forcing them into a cycle of coerced criminal activity.

President Muizzu stated that as the Maldives' economy is built upon international partnerships and a diverse workforce, the government remains committed to prioritizing the protection of human rights and the dignity of every individual within its borders. To fulfill this responsibility, the President highlighted that the administration has implemented robust measures. He specifically noted "Operation Kurangi," an initiative aimed at resolving issues surrounding fraudulent work permits and strengthening the collection of biometric data for foreign workers.

Furthermore, the President highlighted significant reforms, including the submission of the first National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking—established under the Anti-Human Trafficking Act—and the inaugural annual report on national anti-trafficking efforts to the People’s Majlis. He also noted the reconstitution of the high-level steering committee responsible for coordinating anti-trafficking policies. Additionally, he stated that the Migrant Workers Resource Center and the Migrant Connect portal have been established to provide essential support and assistance to exploited workers.

The President stated that the objective of these reforms is to eliminate obstacles faced by vulnerable individuals and to ensure that those in need of assistance can access support more easily. He further noted that the measures include strengthening the capacity of institutions to identify those seeking illicit gains and to hold perpetrators accountable. Furthermore, he highlighted that the formulation of the Maldives Anti-Human Trafficking Strategic Plan 2026–2029 serves as a clear roadmap for identifying and protecting victims, strengthening investigation and prosecution systems, and fostering collaboration among all stakeholders, including international partners.

Despite these advancements, President Muizzu acknowledged that challenges remain, emphasizing that addressing them requires collaborative efforts across various sectors and borders. Highlighting that human dignity must never be compromised, President Muizzu called upon institutions to speak with a unified voice. He urged a renewed commitment to building a Maldives where national development is coupled with the establishment of justice, ensuring that every individual is treated with respect and dignity.
