Naalaafushi Island Council has expressed serious concern over the lack of progress on the island's waste management center upgrade, despite the project being officially contracted to WAMCO. According to the council, the only visible progress to date has been the installation of a project board, with government authorities failing to provide any further updates or information regarding the commencement of physical works.

The Vice President of the M. Naalaafushi Island Council, Ibrahim Zuhaid, has stated that no actual work has been carried out on the island's waste management center project. He noted that the only action taken thus far was the installation of a project board prior to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's visit in 2024.
Expressing concern over the stalled project, Zuhaid told RaajjeTV that the contract to upgrade the waste management centers in Naalaafushi and Maduvvari was awarded to WAMCO. However, he noted that no actual work has been carried out beyond the installation of a project board.
The plan was to hand over waste management for both this island and Maduvvari to WAMCO. This signboard was erected here on the day President Muizzu visited the island, yet no actual work has commenced. This site is the same waste yard established by the previous administration. While this government pledged to upgrade the facility, I am uncertain of its current status. I am also unaware of the progress regarding the Maduvvari project. The arrangement seemed to be that they would move to this site once the work there was completed. However, I have no updates on that project, nor have we received any information regarding the progress of this initiative.Ibrahim Zuhaid
However, in the 2025 Presidential Address, President Muizzu pledged to establish appropriate waste management systems and facilities across all inhabited islands of the Maldives before the end of that year.
