Fayyaz demands economic sovereignty on Independence Day, says “true freedom remains a dream”

Former Economic Development Minister and ex-chairperson of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Fayyaz Ismail has issued a message to the public on Sunday to mark the Maldives' Independence Day, calling for greater economic freedom and improved governance.
In a post shared on social media platform ‘X’, Fayyaz emphasized that national sovereignty reaches its full potential only when citizens are shielded from political incompetence, tyranny, and reckless policy decisions.
The former MDP Chairperson went on to note that achieving genuine economic independence for every Maldivian remains an unfulfilled dream.
Further, he offered prayers for the nation to maintain its sovereignty and continue progressing toward true freedom and dignity for all.
Maldives celebrates its Independence Day annually on July 26, marking the historic date in 1965 when the country achieved full sovereignty, ending decades as a British protectorate.
Official celebrations commenced early Sunday with a traditional flag-hoisting ceremony held at Republic Square at 6am to honor the nation's 61st year of independence.
