Customs Seizes 5.5kg of Narcotics Smuggled via Air Freight

Maldives Customs Service has seized over 5.5 kilograms of narcotics attempted to be smuggled into the country via air.

According to information released by Customs, the items were seized on Thursday, July 18, from two passengers arriving in the Maldives from India. The individuals arrived via Gan International Airport in Addu City.

Customs has confirmed that both individuals are Indian nationals.

The items were discovered during a routine inspection of the two passengers' luggage by customs officers. During the search, officers identified suspicious substances which subsequently tested positive for narcotics upon further analysis.

Customs confirmed that more than 5.5 kilograms of narcotics were seized in this operation. The authorities estimate the street value of the confiscated drugs to be approximately 4.4 million Maldivian Rufiyaa.

The two individuals arrested in connection with this case, along with the seized narcotics, have been handed over to the Maldives Police Service for further investigation. The police are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.

Maldives Customs Service is intensifying its efforts to intercept narcotics being smuggled into the country via air travel. To curb the influx of illicit drugs through international airports, Customs remains vigilant, conducting specialized operations to monitor and inspect passenger luggage.
