The Kulhudhuffushi City Council has raised concerns over the complete suspension of the 25-megawatt powerhouse project, which was initiated by the previous administration to resolve the island's electricity crisis. The council noted that the site has been left abandoned and is falling into disrepair since the change in government.
In an interview with RaajjeTV, the council expressed significant concerns regarding the suspension of the project.
The Kulhudhuffushi City Council has noted that despite President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to continue all ongoing projects without interruption upon taking office, the reality on the ground suggests otherwise. The Council highlighted that regarding this major project initiated during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, not even the simplest task—such as tightening a single screw—has been carried out since the change of government.
The council stated that due to the project's suspension, the corrugated iron fencing remains exactly as it was, leaving the entire area abandoned and in a state of decay.

Furthermore, the council has reported that employees involved in those operations have now been dismissed, despite President Muizzu’s earlier assurances that no staff would lose their jobs.
The ongoing failure to resolve the electricity crisis in Kulhudhuffushi City is causing significant hardship for its residents. The City Council noted that even during the recent month of Ramadan, citizens were forced to endure total blackouts. Furthermore, the Council stated that given the current situation, there is no assurance that adequate electricity services can be restored or maintained through the end of this year.
To address this issue, the Kulhudhuffushi City Council has held consultative meetings with senior government officials. However, the Council stated that these meetings have failed to yield positive results, noting that the government has provided neither specific details nor any assurance regarding how the project will proceed. Consequently, the residents of Kulhudhuffushi remain in anticipation of a permanent solution to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of electricity, a vital basic service.
