Ahmed Shakir, the Member of Parliament for the Maavah constituency, has sent a formal letter to Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla requesting a parliamentary committee inquiry into the frequent power outages in L. Hithadhoo, where electricity is reportedly being cut every 30 minutes.
In the letter, the member stated that the residents of L. Hithadhoo have been working since the beginning of this year to bring the island's severe electricity crisis to the government's attention in hopes of securing a permanent solution.
The Member further stated that the island's residents are enduring immense hardship as power outages occur every 30 minutes. This follows the breakdown of two out of the three generators currently in use on the island.
However, Shakir stated that the current administration has failed to find a solution to this issue.
The member stated that the issue is causing significant disruptions to the daily lives of citizens, resulting in irreparable damage to expensive household electronic appliances. Furthermore, the member expressed regret that no effective solution has been found for the problem to date.
As this issue is a matter of significant public concern directly impacting the lives of citizens, the Member has proposed summoning the Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation to the Parliament’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee for questioning. In a formal letter addressed to the Committee Chairperson, the Member further requested that a committee meeting be convened as soon as possible to deliberate on the matter.
