Sri Lankan police have announced the repatriation of a 23-year-old suspected organized crime member from the Maldives, who was wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a Sri Lankan lawyer and his wife.

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the individual upon his arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport last Friday. He has since been handed over to the Western Province South Crimes Division for further investigation.

According to Sri Lankan police, the suspect, a resident of Ethkandura, was wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a lawyer and his wife in Akuregoda, within the Thalangama Police Division, on February 13, 2024. To ensure his immediate identification and apprehension upon arrival at the airport, his details had previously been integrated into the airport's automated facial recognition system.

Furthermore, police stated that he had been arrested by Baddegama Police in October 2025 in connection with an illicit drug possession case. In December of the same year, he was also apprehended by Embilipitiya Police for possession of heroin. On both occasions, he was produced before the court and ordered to pay a fine.

The Western Province South Crimes Division is currently conducting further investigations into the matter.

Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka is reportedly intimidating Maldivian residents by dispatching local police to their homes in connection with the President's current visit

Allegations have surfaced that government critics are being intimidated ahead of a reception for Maldivians living in Sri Lanka, held as part of the President's official visit. Residents claim that Sri Lankan police, acting on a list provided by the Maldivian Embassy, visited several homes to record statements and warn individuals against attending the meeting. While critics suggest the Embassy is attempting to prevent grievances regarding the management of Sosun Villa from reaching the President, the Ambassador has formally denied these accusations.
