Sri Lankan police have announced the repatriation of a 23-year-old suspected organized crime member from the Maldives, who was wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a Sri Lankan lawyer and his wife.
Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the individual upon his arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport last Friday. He has since been handed over to the Western Province South Crimes Division for further investigation.
According to Sri Lankan police, the suspect, a resident of Ethkandura, was wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a lawyer and his wife in Akuregoda, within the Thalangama Police Division, on February 13, 2024. To ensure his immediate identification and apprehension upon arrival at the airport, his details had previously been integrated into the airport's automated facial recognition system.
Furthermore, police stated that he had been arrested by Baddegama Police in October 2025 in connection with an illicit drug possession case. In December of the same year, he was also apprehended by Embilipitiya Police for possession of heroin. On both occasions, he was produced before the court and ordered to pay a fine.
