Legal expert Aik Ahmed Easa has stated that the parliamentary mechanism for holding the government accountable has weakened.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Aik stated that he does not wish to view the government's interference and alleged corruption within state-owned enterprises as standard projects. However, he contended that if such activities were to be categorized as projects, they would constitute the largest volume of work commissioned by the current administration.
Reflecting on the performance of parliamentarians, Aik stated that many members of the ruling PNC are currently hesitant to even visit the islands within their own constituencies. He noted that this is due to a lack of members advocating for island-specific issues in Parliament, as well as their failure to undertake any meaningful work on behalf of their constituents.
Furthermore, Aik compared the state of affairs during the MDP administration with the current situation.
He stated that during the MDP administration, heads of state-owned enterprises and cabinet ministers were frequently summoned to Parliament for accountability, and that ministers at the time viewed this as an integral part of their duties. However, he noted that a completely different picture is being witnessed today.
