Former Controller of Immigration Shamaan Waheed has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The state has filed three charges against Shamaan. These include robbery, abuse of official authority, and money laundering.
During Tuesday's hearing, Presiding Judge Ibrahim Ihsan ruled that the charges against the defendant had been proven.
The defendant was sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of robbery. However, after deducting time already served in custody, the remaining sentence to be served is seven years, two months, and 20 days. In addition to the prison term, the court ordered the perpetrator to pay 500,000 Rufiyaa in restitution to the victim within a three-month period.
A two-year prison sentence has been handed down following a conviction for the misuse of official authority.
The defendant has been sentenced to 15 years in prison on money laundering charges and ordered to pay a fine of 500,000 Rufiyaa.
In this case, the prosecution requested the forfeiture of MVR 250,000, which was seized by police from Shamaan’s residence and is alleged to be linked to money laundering. Furthermore, the state sought to recover the remaining MVR 150,000 from the total MVR 400,000 Shamaan was accused of possessing.
The prosecution requested that this balance be settled using an equivalent amount from the other funds seized by police during the search of his home. The presiding judge subsequently granted the order for the forfeiture of these assets.
