Stating that the party's leadership must make space for the younger generation, Mohamed noted that former President Mohamed Nasheed contesting for the position would not be the most beneficial move for the party.

Ibrahim Mohamed, a candidate in the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election, has decided to withdraw from the race and endorse fellow candidate Meekail Ahmed Naseem, the Member of Parliament for the South Galolhu constituency.
He stated that his decision to endorse Meekail was rooted in the principle of providing leadership opportunities for the youth. He further noted that he made this choice out of a conviction that Meekail’s chairmanship would best facilitate a path for young people to serve at the party's forefront. Additionally, he pledged to exert every effort to ensure Meekail is elected as Chairperson.
He further stated that it would not be in the party's best interest for former President Mohamed Nasheed to contest for the position of chairperson. He noted that he has been working for former President Nasheed and the MDP since the age of 18, and is now approaching 40. He questioned whether he should still be expected to follow President Nasheed and work toward electing him as chairperson.
"It deeply saddens me to speak out against President Nasheed. I have dedicated myself to this party and to President Nasheed since I was 18 years old. Should we still be working to appoint President Nasheed as Chairperson even now?" he asked.
He noted that despite spending the majority of his life dedicated to the party and President Nasheed, it is evident that young people are still being denied the opportunity to contest for leadership positions within the party. He further stated that the move to appoint President Nasheed as the party's chairperson demonstrates that such senior figures still lack the vision to provide opportunities for the youth.
"I had hoped President Nasheed would step aside this time to give Mikael and me the opportunity. However, he did not grant us that chance," he said.
He noted that he will be working alongside Meekail in the future. Meekail stated that Ibrahim Mohamed’s decision to withdraw from the chairperson race and endorse him provides a significant boost to his campaign.
