Press freedom crackdown

Dr. Muizzu reaches appalling new low by trashing independent journalists

The Muizzu administration is facing intense criticism for systematically suppressing press freedom through intimidation, legal crackdowns, and state-sponsored propaganda. Journalists report a climate of fear characterized by criminal indictments and verbal abuse from the head of state, who recently compared reporters to sewage-dwelling creatures. Despite using taxpayer funds to influence media coverage, the regime continues to lose public support and electoral ground.

Ever since Dr. Mohamed Muizzu grabbed the reins of power in 2023, the state has continuously ratcheted up its deployment of suffocating regulations against the press and executed blatant violations of journalistic independence.

Right from the starting line of this administration, there has been a transparently deliberate push to crush autonomous reporting, purposefully breeding a climate of intimidation where only the puppets echoing the official state line are permitted to survive.

Reporters who dare to stray from the government-approved talking points find themselves directly in the crosshairs of aggressive hostility coming straight out of the country's ultimate office.

New era of state-sanctioned intimidation

The truth-tellers in the island nation are currently grinding away under a staggering amount of state-sponsored duress.

Even though past leadership eras certainly presented various hurdles for free speech, the current regime has engineered a methodical choking of democratic freedoms to a severity that this country has never witnessed before.

The looming shadow of criminal indictments, random roundups and actual jail time, paired with routine state crackdowns on newsrooms, has twisted into a highly alarming status quo.

A constant, suffocating dread of courtroom retaliation for digging into specific taboo subjects has successfully paralyzed the entire journalistic horizon.

Buying public love while the ship sinks

This aggressive silencing of the press is widely viewed not just as a malicious penalty slapped onto individual writers, but as an absolute tragedy for everyday citizens.

By actively blocking deep dives into state financial greed and breaking the public's ability to hold politicians responsible for their actions, the pathways toward open transparency and citizen awareness are being systematically boarded up.

Those in political opposition argue that the foundational integrity of the whole country has been thoroughly corrupted since the day President Muizzu walked into office, with his regime explicitly choosing to favor personal grudges against independent news platforms that only want to expose raw facts.

To make matters even more cynical, accusations are flying that the state is burning through millions of taxpayer MVR on a monthly basis to financially prop up favorite propaganda outlets to aggressively distort how the public sees reality.

Even so, despite dumping massive resources into buying admiration through raw political influence and power, the regime's popularity scores are still sliding straight downhill.

Independent political experts point directly to the administration's humiliating defeat during recent mid-term elections as undeniable proof of this evaporating public backing.

From rigged laws to sewer speeches

In a frantic bid to lock down absolute dominance over free journalism, the People’s Majlis, which is completely dominated by Muizzu's political machinery, has rolled out targeted statutory rewrites explicitly designed to choke out normal news activities.

On top of that, judicial mandates have been handed down to muzzle investigative reporting, while multiple writers have actually been thrown behind bars simply for publishing their investigations or for daring to ask uncomfortable, critical questions to people in power.

In the absolute peak of this hostile campaign, the incumbent just hurled a brutally insulting verbal assault right at the faces of reporters. In his personal estimation, the media professionals of the Maldives are trapped practicing the absolute bottom-barrel garbage tier of their profession.

During an official meeting of reporters right inside the walls of the President’s Office, he deliberately dragged them through public degradation.

In the most stunning twist of all, the incumbent went as far as to equate Maldivian reporters to vile creatures that dwell inside wastewater systems.

This shocking incident establishes an ugly milestone, representing the first time in the entire chronicle of the country that a sitting head of state has degraded the working press with such incredibly classless and toxic rhetoric.
