Ahmed Shaaz, the father of journalist Mohamed Shahzan, has stated that the government’s failure to hear the calls for his son’s release is due to them turning a deaf ear to the matter.
He made these remarks during a protest held on Sunday night calling for Shahzan's release.
Speaking at the protest, Shaaz stated that the government continues to ignore repeated calls for the release of journalist Shahzan. He emphasized that the situation Shahzan faces today could happen to anyone tomorrow, asserting that journalism is not a crime.
Alongside Shaaz, other protesters also called for Shahzan's immediate release. Participants warned that the more the government attempts to silence the public, the more people will rise up in defiance.
The High Court on Sunday accepted the appeals filed by *Adhadhu* journalists Mohamed Shahzan and Leevan Ali Naseer regarding their prison sentences and fines, which were imposed in connection to a news article and an inquiry.
While Leevan has since been released, Shahuzan has remained in custody for 12 days as of Sunday.
