Although Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) previously stated that Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahdi, who died during an underwater cave dive, became separated from his buddy diver while ascending to the surface, it has now emerged that this information was released before being fully verified.
Government spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef has provided comments to various international media outlets regarding this matter. Speaking to the BBC on the day of the incident, Shareef stated that eight rescue divers had submerged, and it was only upon their resurfacing that they discovered Mahdi was missing.
When RaajjeMV reached out for further details regarding the incident, Shareef stated that, according to the information available to him, Mahdi became separated from his dive buddy while ascending near the surface. However, reliable sources have confirmed to RaajjeMV that the events of that day did not unfold in the manner described.
Reliable sources have confirmed that Mahdi's body was discovered by the Marine Police. Information indicates that he was already deceased at the time he was found. However, information previously released by the military stated that Mahdi was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Furthermore, many are questioning why the body of an individual who went missing while ascending was discovered so deep within the cave.
Therefore, when questioned regarding the matter, Shareef stated that the information he provided was based on what was available to him at the time. He noted that the relevant authorities are currently investigating the issue. Consequently, Shareef added that any further information or updates on the matter would be shared by those investigative bodies.
As numerous questions surround the case, journalists have been raising various inquiries within the MNDF media group. However, no responses have been provided thus far, despite the persistent stream of questions directed at both the police and the military.
