Wednesday's parliamentary sitting delayed due to lack of quorum
Wednesday's parliamentary session was delayed by an hour due to a lack of quorum, marking the latest in a series of disruptions and delays that have plagued the People's Majlis this term. Since the start of the year's first session, numerous sittings have been canceled without explanation, with some breaks lasting over a month. The failure of the PNC-led supermajority to maintain a regular legislative schedule has drawn widespread public criticism as parliamentary work continues to stall.

The Speaker has announced a delay to the start of the People’s Majlis session after failing to meet the required quorum, despite the People’s National Congress (PNC) holding a supermajority in the house.
Sittings of the People's Majlis typically commence at 9:00 a.m. However, during Wednesday's sitting, the Deputy Speaker and MP for Diggaru constituency, Ahmed Nazim, announced that the sitting would be rescheduled to 10:00 a.m. This decision followed a failure to achieve the required quorum at the initial start time, even after the quorum bell was rung.
Wednesday's session marks the 19th sitting of the first term of 2024.
Numerous sittings of the People's Majlis were cancelled during the first session of 2024. Following a two-month recess, the parliament reconvened for the year on February 5th. Despite three months having passed since the start of the first session, no official reason has been disclosed for the frequent cancellation of scheduled sittings.
Following a session held on February 17 during this year's first term, the Parliament did not convene again until March 8, marking a hiatus of approximately three weeks. Since then, parliamentary sittings have resumed after a further break of 35 days.
