Abdulla Shahid, President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, has departed for Shanghai, China, to attend a meeting of the Council of the Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (CPGA).
The high-level meeting, scheduled to commence this Sunday in Shanghai, aims to facilitate discussions on pressing global issues and the key objectives of the United Nations. Shahid served as the President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
Under his presidency, themed the "Presidency of Hope," he undertook significant efforts to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, combat climate change, and reform the United Nations. His tenure was marked by a proactive approach to global challenges and a commitment to revitalizing the international organization. The international community has particularly recognized his dedication to empowering women and youth, as well as his focus on expanding their roles within political and diplomatic spheres.
The Council of the Presidents of the General Assembly (CPGA) was established in 1997 to leverage the expertise and experience of former Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly. The Council works to support the United Nations, specifically by providing counsel to the incumbent President of the General Assembly and strengthening the Assembly's role in addressing major global challenges.
Shahid is an active member of the council’s initiatives. In this capacity, he participated in the council's meetings held last year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Doha, Qatar; and Bratislava, Slovakia, where he presented significant proposals for international peace and development.
