Government is utilizing the police service to suppress youth and leaders participating in MDP's political activities
The legal counsel for Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed, Vice President of the MDP Youth Wing, has dismissed police allegations against him as baseless and politically motivated. Speaking after a police summons, Maimoon characterized the investigation as an attempt to obstruct political activities and intimidate young activists, while categorically denying the charges of obstructing police duties.

Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed, the Vice President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) youth wing, has been summoned by the police over allegations of assaulting an officer and obstructing police duties during a recent protest.
He arrived at the police station accompanied by his legal counsel. Speaking to RaajjeTV following the meeting, his lawyer stated that although the allegations against his client include assaulting a police officer, the authorities were unable to provide any specific details regarding the incident.
The lawyer stated that the allegations against Maimoon are entirely baseless. During the meeting, police indicated they would contact him should any further information be required for the investigation.

Speaking to the press, Maimoon stated that whenever the MDP is in the opposition, there is a recurring pattern of using the police institution to obstruct the party’s political activities and target its youth members and leadership.
Maimoon stated that the MDP has always prioritized conducting peaceful political activities. He noted that the party’s decision to take to the streets to voice their concerns is a direct result of their opposition to government policies. Denying the allegations against him, he asserted that the charges are a politically motivated attempt to sideline him.

He was summoned in connection with an investigation into allegations that, on April 18, 2026, he participated in an illegal assembly across various areas of Malé in violation of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act. He is accused of engaging in loud protests that disrupted public transport and local businesses, obstructing police officers from performing their duties, defying lawful orders, and physically assaulting officers.
