Bank of Maldives (BML) has entered into a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Singapore Management University, marking a significant expansion of their strategic alliance.
The country’s national bank revealed that this partnership is designed to bolster professional education, leadership growth and overall capacity building within the bank.
The agreement serves to solidify the relationship between the BML Academy which is the bank’s internal hub for academic as well as professional advancement and the SMU Academy, which acts as the professional training branch of the university.
Through this collaboration, the university will assist in creating and providing customized learning initiatives for the bank's workforce while fostering internal proficiency through a structured exchange of knowledge. This move is intended to enhance the BML Academy’s capacity to offer high-quality development programs on a larger scale and establish defined tracks for ongoing professional progress.

According to CEO and Managing Director of the national bank Mohamed Shareef, this alliance underscores a dedication to cultivating a robust leadership pipeline and elevating professional standards throughout the institution. He noted that as the most prominent financial entity in the country, the bank holds a vital position in influencing the economy. He further explained that through its academy, the bank is establishing structured learning routes aligned with international standards to empower the next generation of economic leaders.
The collaboration has already yielded results, with forty employees successfully finishing leadership programs conducted with the university last year. Specifically, 20 senior staff members were awarded the Executive Certificate in Leadership and People Management directly from the Singaporean institution. Another 20 staff members attained the Certificate in Leadership and People Management through the BML Academy following the completion of a university-led program. Additional groups of employees are currently participating in similar training as the partnership matures.
BML continues to prioritize investing in the growth of its staff and refining organizational capabilities to support its internal transformation and its goal of providing improved banking services.
BML Academy remains the primary vehicle for delivering these structured professional development opportunities to the bank's personnel.
