Lawsuit against Bassam over unpaid gold credit card bill withdrawn after settlement

The Bank of Maldives (BML) has withdrawn the case it filed against former President of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) Bassam Adeel Jaleel over unpaid dues on his Visa Gold Credit Card.
The country’s national bank had sued Bassam, who is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence for money laundering and embezzlement of FAM funds, for failing to pay Rupees 89,997 on the card. The case was withdrawn after Bassam settled the outstanding amount.
Following the payment, Civil Court Judge Mohamed Easa Fulhu stated that the bank had informed the court that Bassam had cleared all dues.
Bassam had previously been sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of embezzlement and is now serving a total of nine years in relation to the FAM funds case following his money-laundering conviction.
He was first sentenced to four years on October 8 for embezzlement and money laundering and later received an additional five-year sentence on October 30 in a separate embezzlement and money-laundering case.
