Dr. Ali Azwar, who had been serving as the acting head of the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), was officially appointed as the company’s Managing Director on Tuesday.
The Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) has announced the appointment of Ali Azwar, of Nesprovilla, S. Feydhoo, to the post on Tuesday.
Azwar is the third Managing Director appointed to STELCO by the current administration. The government initially appointed Hussain Fahmy to the position. However, he was dismissed on September 7, 2025, amid public outcry over frequent power outages in Male' and Hulhumale', as well as rising electricity bills. Following his removal from STELCO, Fahmy was initially transferred to a senior position at the President's Office. Earlier this month, he was appointed as the Managing Director of MWSC.
The position of Managing Director at STELCO became vacant following the dismissal of Ahmed Shamah Rasheed last January, who had succeeded Fahmy in the role. Since Shamah’s removal, reports indicate that several corruption allegations against him have been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). However, the ACC has yet to disclose any specific details regarding these cases.
Dr. Ali Azwar is a long-serving veteran of STELCO, having dedicated many years of service to the company. Since joining the utility provider in 1997, Dr. Azwar has held several key leadership roles, including Deputy Managing Director and Executive Director, alongside various other senior management positions.
