Second phase of Hoarafushi road construction project remains incomplete
The Hoarafushi Island Council has expressed concern over delays in the second phase of the island's road construction project and the lack of information shared regarding the third phase. The Council President emphasized that local councils and residents must be consulted during development projects, noting that the current administration appears to be sidelining the council's involvement. Consequently, the council is calling for the expedited completion of the roadworks to ensure that residents can benefit from the infrastructure as soon as possible.

The President of the Hoarafushi Island Council, Mohamed Waheed, has expressed concern over the slow progress of the second phase of the island's road construction project. He noted that while a third phase has already been announced, the council remains in the dark regarding which roads will be developed or the overall concept for the new stage.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Haalu Kihineh" program from the site where the second phase of the Hoarafushi road construction project began, Hoarafushi Council President Mohamed Waheed stated that a ceremony was held to begin paving the road with asphalt just prior to the parliamentary elections. However, he noted that the only progress made at that time was the ceremonial announcement itself. Waheed further explained that after a prolonged delay following the ceremony, physical work has now finally commenced. Current efforts on the project include the installation of curbstone and the laying of underground pipes.
Waheed stated that he observed the announcement for the third phase of the road construction project while the second phase remains incomplete. However, he noted that the Hoarafushi Council has not received any official information regarding this matter. Furthermore, he emphasized that the council has not been informed about which specific roads are included in the third phase, nor have they been shared any concepts or designs for the project.
So far, only an announcement has been made. It is now hoped that the second phase of the project will proceed at a faster pace and be completed as soon as possible, allowing the public to finally enjoy the convenience of improved roads.Hoarafushi Council President Mohamed Waheed
Waheed stated that during the first phase of the project, MTCC, the council, the ministry, and the former Member of Parliament worked in close coordination to incorporate any changes requested by the public into the project concept. However, he noted that the current administration’s approach to development projects has distanced itself from the council. He further emphasized that the council is the primary institution of Hoarafushi and that the interests of the island's residents must remain the top priority. Consequently, Waheed asserted that the views and consultation of these stakeholders must be sought in such matters.
