Mohamed Sinan, the current Member of Parliament for the North Hithadhoo constituency, has secured the People’s National Congress (PNC) primary ticket for the same seat.
The primary for this constituency was held following a Supreme Court ruling that declared Sinan’s seat vacant due to a bank loan dispute.
According to the Constitution, a Member of Parliament shall lose their seat if they fail to settle a proven debt in accordance with a court judgment. Specifically, Article 73(c)(1) stipulates that for an individual with a proven debt to remain eligible for parliament, they must be making payments as mandated by the court. Sinan previously lost his seat due to his failure to meet this eligibility requirement. However, he has since settled the outstanding loan.
Consequently, when the PNC opened nominations for its primary to contest the seat, Sinan applied once again. He was challenged by Ahmed Saeed (Soda), who currently serves as the councilor for the Moolekede constituency.
A total of 727 individuals were eligible to vote in the People's National Congress (PNC) primary for the Hithadhoo North constituency. Following the election held on Saturday, the results show that Sinan secured a victory in the primary. Sinan received over 200 votes, while Saeed garnered 187 votes.
The main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has also launched its campaign for this constituency. Former Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe) secured the party's ticket automatically, as no other candidates stepped forward to contest the primary.
