While fostering compassion toward animals through Islamic values and humanitarian principles is a cornerstone of Maldivian society, it is equally vital that legal action be taken against those who commit acts of cruelty.
Section 625 of the Penal Code stipulates that committing acts of cruelty against animals is a criminal offense. Under this law, the standard sentencing guideline for such an offense is one month and six days of imprisonment. Furthermore, the court may impose a maximum prison sentence of up to three months for this crime.
