The Prosecutor General's Office has taken measures in response to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that these measures were decided upon to support the state's broader efforts to mitigate the potential economic impacts on the Maldives resulting from the ongoing global economic challenges linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, several measures are set to be implemented from April 7, 2026, to May 31, 2026. These changes include designating every Tuesday as a remote work day for staff, conducting official meetings online, and reducing office operating hours. Additionally, the initiative aims to cut down on electricity consumption, minimize paper usage, and limit the use of official office vehicles.
Furthermore, the office noted that while employees will generally work from home every Tuesday during this period, staff will continue to attend the office in person to carry out essential tasks that cannot be performed remotely.
Furthermore, it was stated that court hearings will be attended regularly. Official meetings that cannot be conducted online, or those where an online format is deemed likely to compromise the intended outcome, will be held in person.
To reduce electricity costs, the Prosecutor General’s Office has decided to encourage employees to perform tasks from home after 2:00 PM on working days, provided the work can be completed remotely. Additionally, the office has moved its closing time forward to 6:00 PM.
The Prosecutor General’s Office stated that these changes will not result in any disruptions or delays to the services provided to the public or other government institutions.
With the conflict in the Middle East ongoing for some time, many are criticizing the government's economic and fiscal policies as the state implements sudden post-election austerity measures under the guise of cost-cutting.
