MDP Chairperson

MDP Chairperson Ghafoor faces removal motion with 55 signatures

A motion has been submitted by 55 members to remove MDP’s interim chairperson, Abdulla Ghafoor Moosa, alleging that he has failed to protect the party's interests and has dismissed senior officials in violation of the party’s constitution. The petition claims that Ghafoor’s decisions are being compromised by external influences, leading to internal divisions and a loss of confidence among the general membership. Consequently, the members emphasize the urgent need to appoint an independent chairperson capable of operating without bias to secure the party’s future.

A motion to remove the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) interim chairperson, Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, has been submitted with the signatures of 55 party members.

The motion submitted on Tuesday states that the MDP National Congress appointed Ghafoor as the party's interim chairperson to organize the necessary efforts to halt the government's major atrocities and its attempts to transition the entire state into an authoritarian regime.

At a time when the world is embroiled in major conflict and the government’s current policies are exacerbating the hardships faced by the Maldives and its people, many citizens have turned to the MDP. They expressed their hope and expectation that the party would lead the nation toward a path of safety and stability.

The complaint states that the public's aspirations can only be realized by fulfilling the responsibilities of the Chairperson in a manner that protects the party's interests and broadens its support. This includes ensuring that no individual regarded by the general membership as a leader is sidelined, while remaining attuned to the sentiments of the rank and file. However, the complaint alleges that the Acting Chairperson, in exercising their duties, appears to be making key decisions based on the directives of external parties rather than acting independently.

It has been alleged that actions are being taken in direct violation of the party's basic charter. Specifically, the complaint notes that Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed was informed of his removal from office, and Legal Director Ahmed Maumoon was also abruptly dismissed without being provided any justification for the decision.

Regarding the matter, it was noted that the party is currently engaged in extensive work with various state institutions following the submission of complaints and other issues related to the recently concluded elections. The statement further highlighted that the sudden dismissal of the party’s Legal Director without any prior notice or explanation at such a critical juncture would cause significant distress among the party's general membership.

It was noted that these issues have increased the risk of eroding the growing support and public trust the MDP has gained. Furthermore, such actions are expected to incite discord among general members and pave the way for internal divisions within the party. The complaint further asserts that interim chairperson Ghafoor has failed to protect the interests of the party and its members at this critical juncture. It suggests that the best course of action is for him to step down, allowing the position to be handed over to an individual who will work independently and fairly to safeguard members' interests and bolster the party's support and credibility.

Consequently, a motion signed by 55 members has been submitted to remove the party's interim chairperson, Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, from his position.
