Former Supreme Court Justice Husnu Al Suood has leveled serious allegations against the Elections Commission (EC), claiming the electoral body is attempting to compromise the secrecy of the ballot in the upcoming elections scheduled for April 4.
Expressing concern over the upcoming local council elections and the referendum, Suood stated in a social media post that he has received information suggesting the Elections Commission is planning to act in a manner that compromises the secrecy of the vote.
Providing further details on the matter, Suood stated that the Elections Commission intends to clarify with each voter which of the three elections they wish to participate in before issuing only the specific ballot papers they request.
Suood noted that the Elections Commission (EC) is reluctant to hand voters three separate ballot papers simultaneously for three concurrent elections. However, he argued that once the three ballots are issued, the decision of which specific votes to cast should remain entirely at the voter's discretion.
Protecting the secrecy of the ballot is one of the most fundamental principles of democracy. Political experts have noted that any action allowing others to know how an individual intends to vote is an infringement on the freedom to vote.
Opposition parties are alleging that the Elections Commission is engaging in numerous unlawful activities to manipulate election results in favor of the government.
