Public believes the referendum is a move by PNC to remain in power indefinitely: Ahmed Haleem

Former Member of Parliament for the Bilehdhoo constituency, Ahmed Haleem, has stated that the public views the proposed referendum as a deceptive maneuver by the ruling PNC to remain in power indefinitely.

Speaking to RaajjeTV during the MDP’s ongoing nationwide campaign tour, Ahmed Haleem emphasized the critical importance of winning the upcoming local council and referendum elections to safeguard the Maldives' decentralization system and ensure uninterrupted island development. Ahmed Haleem further stated that the public is increasingly aware that the proposed referendum is a calculated move by the ruling PNC to consolidate power and remain in government indefinitely.

Ahmed Haleem stated that the islands of the Maldives show a public that is highly aware of this election, and that the people will overwhelmingly reject the proposal in the referendum.

They view this as a calculated and deceptive maneuver by Muizzu to ensure the PNC remains in power indefinitely. They are well-informed enough that we should not even need to address this matter. I believe the public will overwhelmingly reject this election.

Furthermore, Ahmed Haleem stated that there are numerous reasons to reject the referendum. He noted that among the most common concerns raised by the public is the fact that the vote is being organized without providing any information or transparency to the citizens. He added that the public does not recognize the legitimacy of this election.

Ahmed Haleem noted that the purpose of this trip is to secure votes for the MDP in upcoming elections and, specifically, to raise public awareness regarding the decentralization system and the reforms the government intends to implement.
