The Kulhudhuffushi City Council has reached several key decisions regarding measures that can be implemented at the municipal level to mitigate potential impacts resulting from the conflict in Iran.
These decisions were reached during the 6th emergency meeting of the Kulhudhuffushi City Council’s fourth session. The five council members in attendance unanimously passed seven proposals aimed at ensuring the safety and basic needs of the city's residents.
One of the most significant decisions made by the council is to conduct weekly monitoring of fuel, gas, water, and staple food stocks to ensure the island's food and energy security.
In response to fluctuating global fuel prices caused by the ongoing conflict, a decision has been made to switch off lights in island parks and public squares after midnight to reduce electricity costs.
Furthermore, the council has decided to implement three key measures aimed at alleviating the economic challenges faced by residents. These initiatives include launching a social media campaign to provide information on cost-cutting measures, formally requesting the relevant ministry to increase the island's designated solar energy quota, and opening applications for permits to begin work on previously allocated agricultural plots.
In addition to these measures, the council has pledged to monitor the living conditions of impoverished families on the island and work toward providing solutions if they face any food insecurities.
The Kulhudhuffushi City Council concluded its meeting by resolving to issue a significant resolution. The resolution calls on the government to expedite land allocation permits for the fuel, gas, and agricultural sectors. Furthermore, the council urged the government to provide the public with clear information regarding fluctuations in the prices of essential services and commodities resulting from the ongoing war.
It is noted that these measures are proactive safeguards implemented to protect the residents of Kulhuduffushi City from the adverse economic impacts resulting from shifts in the international landscape.
