Mayor Athif expresses deep concern over skyrocketing fuel prices

The Mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City, Mohamed Athif, has expressed deep concern over the sudden and sharp rise in fuel prices, calling on the government to provide transparent information to the public. He further urged the administration to curb wasteful spending and to formulate and implement policies aimed at mitigating the potential financial impact on citizens.

In a statement shared on social media today regarding the issue, Mayor Athif noted that the government had assured the public just a week ago that there would be no difficulties in the supply of fuel products. The Mayor reminded the public that the government had previously stated that fuel reserves sufficient for one month were in stock, and that an additional shipment was already en route.

However, the Mayor highlighted significant fluctuations in fuel prices in Kulhudhuffushi City. He noted that the price of a liter of petrol, which stood at MVR 16.09 just a week ago, has surged to MVR 29.30. Similarly, the price of diesel has risen to MVR 29.51 per liter, up from its previous rate of MVR 15.19.

Mayor Athif stated that while he acknowledges the fluctuations in global oil prices due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the current rates are exorbitantly high compared to the assurances previously provided by the government.

I call upon the government to cease misleading the public and provide transparent information. Furthermore, I urge the administration to reduce wasteful spending and formulate and implement policies aimed at mitigating the potential hardships faced by the citizens.
