Public criticism has mounted following the circulation of a video showing the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) removing campaign posters of MDP candidates from the streets of Hulhumale'.
The video was released on Monday.
According to reports, employees of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) carried out an operation to remove these posters during the early hours of Monday morning.
Video footage shows two individuals removing posters and placing them into the back of a pickup truck. As the pair prepared to depart on a motorcycle, a man wearing an HDC t-shirt arrived at the scene. When questioned, he stated that the posters were being removed because they had been put up without the necessary permits.
Furthermore, the official stated that the locations where posters can and cannot be displayed have been officially gazetted. When repeatedly questioned about whether posters were prohibited on that specific street, the official clarified that such actions could only be taken after obtaining specific permits.
HDC has faced widespread public criticism regarding this issue. Many have alleged that the company’s employees carried out the removal of posters during the early hours of the dawn specifically to hide their actions from the public.
While the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) continues to remove posters of MDP candidates, numerous posters and billboards of candidates from the ruling PNC remain displayed throughout Hulhumale' Phase 1 and Phase 2. Furthermore, HDC employees have been observed actively participating in the installation of these ruling party posters and billboards.
