"The referendum on synchronizing elections is a crime being committed to seize development of all Maldivians"
Mohamed Rasheed Hussain has accused the People's National Congress (PNC) of maintaining a long-standing ideology that opposes the decentralization system, alleging that the party attempts to dismantle the framework whenever they assume power.

Former Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain has characterized the proposed referendum to align presidential and parliamentary elections as a "crime" aimed at seizing the developmental progress of the Maldivian people.
He made these remarks while speaking at an MDP pickup rally.
He stated that the PNC ideology has always been opposed to the decentralization system and has consistently worked to dismantle it. He noted that this pattern is evident every time those aligned with the PNC ideology come to power. Bigey further remarked that the Maldives' democratic system is not yet mature enough to conduct presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously.
"The experience with the current administration's ideology has been a bitter one. They are usurping powers and dismantling the decentralized system. Services provided to the citizens are being stripped away. These are actions that we cannot allow to persist," he said.
He stated that since its first day in office, the current administration has been systematically dismantling public empowerment. He noted that during two of the past four terms governed by the MDP, the party's efforts to guarantee fundamental rights remain clearly evident. Specifically, he highlighted the extensive work undertaken to empower citizens in alignment with the principles of the decentralization system.
