MDP Pickup Rally: Merging two elections is a deceptive tactic to prolong the presidential term
Participants of the pickup rally asserted that the government's cost-cutting measures are merely a pretext, arguing instead that state expenditure is driven up by political appointments and systemic corruption. Furthermore, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has urged the public to vote against the proposal to synchronize elections, warning that such a move would undermine the democratic system and diminish the opportunity to hold the government accountable.

Speakers at the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) ongoing "pickup rallies" have alleged that the government’s efforts to synchronize presidential and parliamentary elections are part of a deceptive scheme to extend its term in office. As part of a series of activities organized by the opposition MDP to protest the merging of elections, two pickup rallies were held in different areas of Hulhumale' on Thursday afternoon.
These activities were conducted in the vicinity of the Local Market in Hulhumale' Phase 1 and the Vinares towers in Phase 2. Speakers at the gathering provided detailed arguments on why the public should vote against the proposal to synchronize the two elections in the upcoming referendum scheduled for April 4.
Participants of the meeting highlighted that all the progress and essential services achieved by the Maldivian people to date are the direct results of the competitive elections held in the country. They noted that it was through free and competitive elections that Maldivians began to secure access to clean drinking water, housing, and a connected national transport network, as well as a robust social protection system.
MDP members have asserted that the government's primary justification for consolidating elections—cost reduction—is misleading. They alleged that the surge in state expenditure is not driven by the frequency of elections, but rather by the proliferation of redundant political appointments under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration and systemic corruption within the government.
Furthermore, participants at the rally warned that if the public decides to consolidate the two elections, it would effectively close all avenues for holding the government accountable. Speakers at the MDP "pickup rally" also asserted that such a change would infringe upon the citizens' right to vote and ultimately weaken the country's democratic framework.
