Dr. Mariyam Mariya, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, has stated that efforts to manage and, where necessary, cull bat and crow populations to alleviate the burden on farmers will be carried out with special care.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the Minister stated that councils have been requested to monitor and survey the populations of bats and crows on their respective islands. The Minister further noted that a management strategy will only be developed once these comprehensive assessments are completed.
We are consulting with the Ministry of Environment to determine the most effective management strategies for these creatures. There are specific environmental regulations in place, including international standards. The fruit bats and crows found in our country are considered unique local species. Consequently, we have been urged to ensure that any actions taken—whether culling or other management measures—are conducted with careful oversight and in strict accordance with these established policies.Dr. Mariyam Mariya, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.
