The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to file a court case seeking to overturn President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s decree to hold a public referendum on whether to conduct presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) announced this during a press conference held on Monday, according to Mauroof Zakir, the Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency. Mauroof stated that following a review of the resolution, the party intends to file a case in court on Tuesday seeking to have it declared unlawful.
Mauroof further stated that an interim injunction must be issued to halt the referendum before a final decision is reached on the resolution. He warned that failure to do so could result in irreparable damage to the Maldivian people and the nation.
Speaking at a press conference, Mauroof stated that the MDP would undertake extensive efforts to stop the matter. He noted that a nationwide campaign has been planned, including a large-scale protest scheduled for March 21.
Mauroof stated that the Maldivian people must rise against efforts to steer the country back toward authoritarianism. He urged citizens to join the MDP’s ongoing efforts and reject the proposal to consolidate the two elections.
President Muizzu issued the decree on Monday, February 16, regarding the referendum to synchronize the two elections.
