MACL employees to receive overtime pay during Ramadan only for hours worked exceeding 48 hours
Despite the reduction in working hours for administrative staff during Ramadan, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has decided that overtime pay will only be granted for work exceeding 48 hours per week. This decision has sparked widespread dissatisfaction among employees, with many describing it as a significant financial burden during the holy month.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that its employees will only be eligible for overtime pay during the month of Ramadan for hours worked in excess of 48 hours.
In a circular issued last Monday, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) announced that the official working hours for its administrative staff during the month of Ramadan 1447 and the first seven days of Shawwal have been set at four hours and 30 minutes. The designated working hours are from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm, with a grace period established between 9:00 am and 9:30 am.
MACL stated that duty-based staff will continue to follow their standard working hours, as determined by the duty rosters set by their respective departments or sections, consistent with other months.
Furthermore, MACL stated that overtime pay during Ramadan will be granted, consistent with other months, only for hours worked in excess of 48 hours per week.
Consequently, employees will not be eligible for overtime pay unless their total working hours exceed 48 hours per week.
Following MACL's decision, many employees have taken to social media to voice their frustration. Staff members have described the move as a significant burden during the month of Ramadan, noting that they are frequently required to work beyond their scheduled shifts. Furthermore, employees argued that they should be compensated for all overtime work performed, regardless of whether they have completed the 48-hour weekly threshold.
Under the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has been increasingly undertaking projects that fall outside its core mandate. These initiatives include land reclamation, the procurement of ambulances, and the signing of agreements to develop a five-star resort and a hotel school.
The company has faced widespread criticism regarding this matter. Many have pointed out the lack of development across the country's airports and accused the management of significant negligence toward the company's employees.
