Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed has stated that the judiciary can only become a force organized to eliminate injustice if an independent environment is established where judges can work free from all forms of influence.
He made these remarks while delivering the Judicial Statement at the ceremony held Sunday night to inaugurate the Judicial Year 2026. He further emphasized that the judiciary must be structured as a power that ensures justice is upheld across all branches of the state.
The Chief Justice stated that this objective is established to ensure that all those entrusted with the administration of the state bear the responsibility of safeguarding the independence of the courts, ensuring they function as impartial and robust institutions accessible to everyone for legal redress.
Furthermore, the Chief Justice stated that the Department of Judicial Administration is currently working to digitalize the operations of the courts to expedite judicial processes. He noted that efforts are underway to modernize the manual criminal record clearance process through a dedicated database. The Chief Justice highlighted that once this initiative is completed, the time required for criminal record clearance will be reduced from seven days to just one day.
"The Department of Judicial Administration has been instructed to prioritize the transition to verbatim transcription of court proceedings in Thaana script, as we have yet to realize the full benefits of this initiative," Abdul Ghanee stated.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Justice highlighted several challenges currently facing the judiciary. He noted that the failure to review the salaries of judicial staff in the past had led to numerous difficulties and emphasized that the lack of adequate space in courts remains a significant concern.
Furthermore, the Chief Justice stated that efforts are underway to implement necessary changes to the administrative structure of the courts. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining a sustainable system for monitoring court operations.
