Opportunity to invest in the long-term preservation of the exterior walls of Male's Atoll Shops and the redevelopment of the area into a modern commercial front to be opened in mid-2026
President Muizzu announced that the feasibility study for a Chinese-funded project to construct 50 island council administrative buildings has been completed, and the government is currently focused on land acquisition and finalising the remaining administrative requirements to strengthen the decentralised governance system.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government will open investment opportunities by mid-year to redevelop the Atoll Shop block in Male' into a modern commercial waterfront.
The President made these remarks while delivering the Presidential Address at the opening session of the People's Majlis for the current year, held on Thursday.
President Muizzu stated that the Atoll Shop row is a long-standing heritage site and a symbol of Male's iconic waterfront. He further noted that the redevelopment plans aim to preserve the exterior walls of the building for the long term.
President Muizzu stated that 27 uninhabited islands have been designated as a means to achieve financial self-sufficiency and empower councils within the decentralization system. He further noted that, to date, seven of these islands have been allocated to six councils.
President Muizzu announced that dollar ATMs have been inaugurated in seven new islands, with efforts already underway to install additional dollar ATMs in 70 more islands. The President further disclosed that these ATMs are expected to be operational and available to the public by the end of March this year.
In his remarks, President Muizzu highlighted that efforts to expand the administrative space required for the newly established Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo councils in Addu City will commence this month. The President further stated that the organizational structures of these councils will be revised to facilitate the recruitment of additional administrative and municipal service staff, ensuring the delivery of more efficient services to the public.
President Muizzu further stated that the feasibility study for the project to construct 50 council offices, funded by Chinese government grants, has been completed. He noted that administrative work, including the acquisition of land for these offices, is currently underway.
