President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that water and sewerage systems will be established and operational across all Maldivian islands within the next 18 months. Delivering the Presidential Address, the President stated that the completion of ongoing projects will guarantee access to these essential services for every inhabited island in the country. Furthermore, he highlighted that the government will implement more efficient and cost-effective measures to expedite the maintenance and development of critical infrastructure, including island harbors and road networks.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Public Works units equipped with modern resources will be established across 19 islands in 15 atolls by mid-year, as part of an initiative to expand these services throughout the country.
He made these remarks while delivering the 2026 Presidential Address during the first sitting of the first session of the People's Majlis for the year.
President Muizzu stated that once the Public Works framework is established, the maintenance of infrastructure in the islands will become more efficient and cost-effective. This includes dredging shallow harbors and channels, conducting various harbor repairs, maintaining roads, and managing the upkeep of buildings and other essential infrastructure.
Regarding the progress of water and sewerage projects, President Muizzu stated that since November 17, 2023, water systems have been established and commissioned in 42 islands, while sewerage systems have been completed and brought into service in 39 islands. He further noted that with water systems currently being developed in an additional 51 islands and sewerage systems in 40 more, the establishment of these essential services will soon be completed across all inhabited islands in the Maldives.
He further stated that all ongoing projects will be completed within the next 18 months, ensuring that water and sewerage services are operational across all inhabited islands.
