President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the redevelopment of roads in Malé and Villimalé, which he previously stated would begin last year, has been pushed back to this year.
Delivering the annual Presidential Address on Thursday, the President announced that the design phase for the redevelopment of roads in Malé and Villimalé is scheduled to commence early this year. The project is being funded through a grant from the Chinese government. The President further noted that physical works are expected to begin in the latter half of the year. No additional details regarding the project were provided.
In the 2025 Presidential Address, the President reiterated that the redevelopment of the roads in Malé and Villimalé would commence within the year. Highlighting the current state of the infrastructure, the President noted that the roads in the capital have deteriorated significantly, causing immense hardship for the public. To address this, the President announced that final preparations are underway to launch a major project to reconstruct all roads in Malé to a high standard, funded by a grant from the Chinese government. He confirmed that the feasibility studies have been completed and assured that, God willing, the physical work to modernize all roads in Malé and Villimalé will begin during 2025.
The feasibility study for the redevelopment of roads in Malé and Villimalé was concluded on November 21, 2024. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on the same day, the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure announced that the assessment of road conditions in both islands had been completed following extensive consultations between relevant authorities and the expert team appointed by the Chinese government.
The Ministry stated that the team, in collaboration with its technical staff, has concluded feasibility tests for the streets of Malé and Villimalé. According to the Ministry's post, the project—a joint initiative with China to upgrade the roads of Malé and Villimalé to modern standards—will now proceed to the design phase.
Although the Ministry initially stated in 2024 that design work would commence, the President announced in this year's Presidential Address—nearly a year later—that the design phase for the redevelopment of Malé and Villimalé roads is now scheduled to begin early this year.
