Public criticism has intensified over what many have described as an inadequate official welcome for the Maldives National Futsal Team, following their recent victory in the SAFF Futsal Championship.
The national team returned to the Maldives on Tuesday night after their historic triumph at the tournament held in Thailand.
Although an official welcoming event was held at the Artificial Beach, numerous members of the public expressed disappointment on social media, arguing that the reception failed to reflect the significance of the team’s achievement.
Critics maintained that the team, having won the inaugural SAFF Futsal Championship, merited a more dignified and better-organized reception. They pointed to apparent shortcomings in planning and logistics, suggesting that the event lacked the scale and preparation expected for such a milestone.
Some observers also highlighted what they perceived as limited government attention to the celebration. They noted that the significance accorded to the team’s homecoming and the accompanying festivities appeared minimal. At the same time, others acknowledged that the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) had made its best efforts within its available resources to organize the event.
Comparisons were also drawn with political gatherings, which are often characterized by large crowds and extensive organization. Members of the public expressed disappointment that the turnout for the celebration of a historic national sporting achievement was markedly lower in comparison.
In addition to this, some commentators questioned why the government, which frequently seeks recognition for national achievements, did not give greater priority to commemorating this victory. They argued that with stronger government focus and support, the occasion could have been celebrated in a far more vibrant manner.
Maldives secured the SAFF Futsal Championship with a flawless performance, winning every match in the tournament. The title represents the first international trophy won by the Maldives in the sport of futsal.
