USD 25m stadium project stalled as gov’t scrambles for new funding sources
The government has decided to relocate the national stadium from Galolhu to Hulhumalé Phase I, despite USD 25 million previously allocated under India's Line of Credit for Galolhu Stadium redevelopment. Minister Rafiu stated the government is seeking funding from China and Saudi Arabia for the new location, which will include synthetic tracks and indoor sports facilities.

The Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu, has revealed that efforts are ongoing to secure a budget for the renovation of Galolhu Stadium, despite a prior allocation for a new stadium under the Indian government’s Line of Credit.
Under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, the Indian government extended a USD 40 million LOC to the Maldives, with USD 25 million specifically earmarked for the redevelopment of Galolhu Stadium. At that time, architectural designs were finalized, and the bidding process was successfully completed.
By the time the administration changed, the project was ready to be awarded to a contractor. However, the process was temporarily halted as the government transition was imminent. However, all necessary preparations had been completed for the new administration to proceed with the contract award.
In a recent interview with a local news outlet, Minister Rafiu stressed that constructing a stadium requires a substantial budget. The current administration has decided to relocate the national stadium from its existing site in Galolhu to Hulhumalé Phase I.
The minister further explained that the government is actively seeking funding for the new stadium, exploring potential grants from China and Saudi Arabia. He expressed confidence that funding would be secured, noting that positive indications have already been received.
Previously, Minister Rafiu had stated that the stadium project was proceeding under the LOC following discussions with the Indian government. During a press conference at the President’s Office on 10 September 2024, he confirmed that the decision to move the stadium to Hulhumalé was made in consultation with the Indian government.
On that occasion, Minister Rafiu also highlighted that the project would include the development of synthetic tracks in four different regions, along with an indoor table tennis hall, an indoor basketball hall, and additional volleyball courts.
