The People’s Majlis has approved a resolution to extend its final session of the year until December 4, citing several important tasks that remain incomplete.

Opening Wednesday’s sitting, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla who was presiding over the sitting announced that significant work still needed to be completed during the current session. He therefore stated his intention to extend the Majlis’ final session of the year to December 4.

Following the Speaker’s proposal, the matter was put to a vote. The extension of the third session of 2025 was approved by a majority of the 55 lawmakers who voted, while seven lawmakers voted against it.

Although the extension was justified on the grounds of unfinished important work, Abdul Raheem did not provide any details regarding what those tasks were.

Under the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, parliament’s work is divided into three sessions each year. Parliamentary regulations set the first session from February 1 to May 15, the second session from June 1 to August 15, and the third session from October 1 until the end of November.
