In connection with the large-scale "Lootuvaifi!" protest organized by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on October 3, party National Congress member Fathimath Zahiyya, more commonly known as Zaya, and party activist Aishath Najudha Ali have been summoned by the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Both individuals received police summons on Tuesday. Zaya has been instructed to report to the Galolhu Police Station at 11am on Thursday, while Najudha has been asked to appear at the same station at 09am the same day.

According to the police institution, protesters gathered across different areas of Malé City during the demonstration, allegedly violating the Peaceful Assembly Act by causing public disruption, obstructing transportation, interfering with business activities, and hindering police operations.

Authorities state that Zaya and Najudha are being summoned for sample photo collection and to provide investigative statements related to the October 3 protest. Zaya has reportedly received two summons so far and has been informed of a third pending summons. The third summons, according to police communication, concerns a separate case involving an alleged social media threat directed at the police. In connection with the case, Zaya's phone was previously confiscated under a court order on October 7 after being stopped on the street by police officers.

MDP has revealed that they observe the summoning of its members as a form of political intimidation, particularly in light of a major demonstration the party is planning for November 17. Some members of the public and opposition figures have echoed these concerns, suggesting the police actions are aimed at deterring political expression. There are also claims that women among those summoned are facing disproportionate harassment from the authorities.

As investigations continue, the police have not disclosed further details regarding the ongoing inquiries or the potential charges involved.
