Buru Sports Club made a commanding start to their Dhiraagu Dhivehi Premier League (DPL) campaign with a resounding 5-0 win over Victory Sports Club on Friday night at Galolhu National Stadium.
Buru wasted no time asserting dominance, opening the scoring in just the eighth minute through Abdulla Junaid, who capitalized on a well-worked move to put his side ahead early.
The lead was doubled in the 25th minute when Buru's foreign signing, Hudson Diaz, found the back of the net with a composed finish, giving his side a comfortable cushion heading into halftime.
The second half saw Buru continue their attacking momentum. Hudson Diaz struck again, scoring his second of the night to make it 3-0 and all but seal the win for Buru.
However, Buru players weren’t finished yet. The team added two more goals in stoppage time, as Mohamed Naaim slotted home the fourth in the dying moments, followed just a minute later by Azhaad Mohamed Zahid, who wrapped up the match with the fifth goal.
The dominant performance signals Buru’s serious intent this season, especially as domestic football resumes in the Maldives following a prolonged suspension of activities.
Clubs across the league have undergone intensive preparations amid the challenges of restarting football in the country, and Buru's emphatic opening result is already setting the tone for what promises to be a competitive campaign.
The league action continues on Sunday, with more fixtures lined up as teams look to gain early momentum in this long-awaited season.
