Hussain Hassan, President of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) Villingili constituency, has been released by the Criminal Court after agreeing to specific conditions in connection with his recent arrest.

Hussain was taken into custody after allegedly filming an operation of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) in the Peetral area. According to the police institution, he was arrested on suspicion of disobeying lawful orders and obstructing police duties during an ongoing drug-related operation.

MPS has claimed that Hussain entered a restricted scene to take photos and videos and, when advised to step back to avoid interfering with police work, he refused to comply and allegedly attempted to photograph sensitive evidence.

However, Hussain’s legal counsel challenged the police narrative, stating that authorities were unable to specify what actions constituted obstruction. The lawyer noted that when asked to clarify how Hussain was obstructing duty, the police failed to provide a clear explanation.

The lawyer also emphasized that Hussain reportedly sustained a hand injury during the arrest while being handcuffed. At the time of the report, the lawyer had not yet been granted access to meet his client and confirm the extent of the injury.

Hussain was brought before the Criminal Court on Thursday morning for a remand hearing. Following the proceedings, the court ordered his release on the condition that he fully cooperates with the ongoing investigation into the allegations against him.

Witnesses at the scene described the arrest as violent, with repeated inquiries made to the officers regarding the reason for the detention, questions that, according to multiple sources, went unanswered at the time.

The incident has sparked concern among MDP members and civil rights advocates, who have called for greater transparency in police conduct and the handling of politically affiliated individuals.
